Plantation house georgia history. Butler island, originally a rice plantation dating to the late 1700s, was converted to a dairy and lettuce farm by col. This plantation home is the second nolan farm home, built sometime between 1905 and 1910. The recorded history of carter plantation dates back to 1804 when the property was acquired by james rheams [rheims] [rheem] under a spanish land grant.

The huston house, located on butler island, was constructed in 1927 by colonel t.l. Designed by famed architect philip shutze, it earned its name for the swan motif found throughout the house. Built as a private estate home by colonel sam tate, land baron, philanthropist and business tycoon in 1926, it is now known and loved as an atlanta area wedding venue.

It became part of the string of plantations outside of savannah that helped create the economy of georgia. The nolan farm operated from 1856 until about 1970 and covered around 2,000 acres in morgan county, georgia. The house was the center of a rural georgia farm for 100 years.

The town of estill is nearby. The house stands on the grounds of a plantation with a dark history. Plantations, farms and timberlands dot this stretch of land for more than a hundred miles.
